New Data: Tweet Lots of Links to Get Followers

My effort to analytically study the unicorns-and-rainbows myth of “engaging in the conversation” started by looking at the relationship between the number of followers a user has and the percentage of their Tweets that are “@” replies. I found that highly followed users are less conversational than those with few followers.

This time, I looked at the relationship between follower count and the percentage of a user’s tweets that contain links and are not replies. Using a sample of random, recently active Twitter accounts, I found a strong correlation. As the amount of links a user tweets increases the number of followers they have also increases. And users with more than 1,000 followers tend to tweet many more links…

Introducing @DanZarrella’s Readability Analyzer Plugin for WordPress

Readability is a measurement of how complex a piece of content is. It can be measured as a grade level, the school grade level required to be able to understand the text.

I’ve done a bunch of research in the past into how readability effects sharing, and I’ve found that especially on Facebook, simple language is shared more than complex language.

To help you write highly-readable blog posts, I put together a little plugin that sits in the side bar of your WordPress blog’s post writing page and allows you to analyze the reading grade level of your content with one, quick click.

It’s still very beta, so it may break. But it’s pretty simple code, and doesn’t change…

Really, really bad news (if true)

Not to ruin your Friday afternoon, but a Swiss scientist says mobile phones really are behind bee colony collapse disorder, which threatens – seriously – to kill us all. Assuming this study is legit, we would seem to have a choice between food and phones (or at least food and the phones we currently use). [...]

Write a #UnicornsAndRainbows Rhyme and Win a @MIMOBOT

See that little guy to the left? That’s Dr. Knowledgeus. He’s the mad scientist of the MIMOBOT designer USB drive world.

If you’ve seen me speak or read my site, you know how I feel about Unicorns and Rainbows. Feel good advice based on dangerous and naive assumptions. My goal as the mad social media scientist is to debunk the unicorns and rainbows myths one by one.

In celebration of all other mad scientists out there, I talked to the folks at Mimoco (which is a cool company) and they agreed to partner with me to give away three (3) of their Dr. Knowledgeus 4GB MIMOBOT USB flash drives in the name of social media (mad) science.…

new office

I haven't written much about it, but my office was recently relocated. Good news is, I actually have an office with a window and a door! I do have to share, but the hutch part of my desk separates my side from their side.

So all last week was spent packing and moving. I was some how put in charge of the operation and had to make sure the movers put everything where we needed it. I was already planning on taking Friday off for to get ready for the market, but my desk wasn't installed until yesterday anyway.

Everything is coming together... I'm still moving some things around to find the best place for them, and I need to hang the bulletin boards and such.

We were moved due to some impending renovations. This new-to-us office will be temporary {if you can call two years temporary} and then we'll move back into the newly renovated space. :)

I'll show you pictures once everything is put together!

New Data: “Engage in the Conversation” May Not Actually Work

If you’ve seen me speaking, or you read my blog regularly, you may know that one of my favorite past times is busting social media marketing myths, and one of my favorite examples of “unicorns and rainbows” advice is “engage in the conversation.” Finally, I decided to use data to test the notion that “engaging in the conversation” on Twitter has a positive impact.

People follow you on Twitter because they like what you’re saying, and the more people who follow you, the larger your reach is. If you are a marketer, there is no point in pursuing a twitter strategy that doesn’t include getting as many followers as possible. Naturally, one of the most important measures of success

New Data: 33% of Facebook Posting is Mobile

Some stats have been published, by researchers and the company themselves, about mobile usage of Facebook. But to content creators, one of the most important uses of the social network is when users create posts, sometimes posting original content, often sharing articles and media found elsewhere on the web. I was unable to find much data about how much of this activity occurs via mobile devices, so I decided to research my own.

I used a random sample set of more than 70,000 Facebook public posts (those from users with open privacy settings). The data includes status updates, videos, links and photos. 32.69% of those posts were created from mobile devices. The mobile Facebook website, m.facebook.com lead mobile usage with…

hanging out with o & a

On Saturday I was lucky enough to watch my friend's adorable daughters, Olivia and Ava, for almost the whole day!

I picked them up at 8:30 and we headed to the store to pick up some watercolor paints. And some chocolate covered marshmallows for later, which is why we're in the baking isle. :)

Then we headed back to my house to paint and hang out until the mall was open.

Olivia wanted to go to Claire's to look for new earrings or necklace. She ended up with some faux glasses. They are pink leopard print. Unfortunately I didn't get a photo.

Ava wanted to ride the carousel, so we did that next. :) I had to ride since Ava was too short, lucky me!

For lunch the girls requested McDonald's. Ava downed a cheeseburger and Olivia and I split a 10 piece chicken nuggets. I got an iced coffee to keep me going. ;)

Then we went to see Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer. It was a really cute movie! And this would be where the chocolate covered marshmallows came into play.

When we left the movie, the girls were thrilled to discover that the sun had come out and it had gotten much warmer! I took them a park that has a splash pad.

At first they were hesitant... then they just jumped right in!

They went back and forth between the playground and the splash pad. I protected myself from being splashed with my camera.

I just liked this picture of Ava. Water dripping down her back as she runs back to the playground.

Lastly, I took the girls for ice cream! Their cones were huge! They did not finish the ice cream, I had to scrape off the remaining so they could eat the cones.

It was so much fun! When I told them it was time to go home they asked if they could sleep over at my house. I would call it a successful day. :) I promised them we would have another day together soon. I'm sure mom won't mind.

Need to Justify Social Media? Use Real Numbers About Real Money

With so much unicorns and rainbow nonsense floating around the web, it's easy for your boss to think of social media as little more than wasting time on Facebook. When the thought leaders are saying it's impossible to measure the ROI of social media, it's no surprise executives are wary of investing in it.

If your boss asks you to justify the time you're spending on Twitter, asking him what the ROI of putting your pants on in the morning isn't going to get you far. Is it?

The antidote to the puffery rampant in social media circles is science. Hard data and facts about social media. Numbers-based measurement of reliable and repeatable campaigns is the only way social…

[Infographic] 5 Scientifically Proven Ways to Get More Followers

For marketers the most important use of Twitter is to increase your reach to spread your content. To do this, you need to get more followers. Sure there are customer service uses of Twitter, but for marketing purposes, follower count is key.

I’ve been doing research for a few years now on how to get more followers, and here are some of the most important points I’ve found. You can find details about each point under the infographic.

1. Show Us Who You Are

When you sign up for Twitter, you’re asked to provide 3 pieces of personal information: a bio, a homepage link and a picture. Many more accounts than you’d expect don’t do these simple things. But…

Hip-Hop Marketing: An Interview with Nah Right’s Eskay

I don’t do a ton of interviews, in fact I’ve only done two in this site’s history. One with Craig Newmark of Craigslist and one with Alex Bogusky formerly of CP+B. I only interview folks who I think bring a unique perspective to social media marketing.

Nah Right is considered one of the most influential Hip-Hop blogs on the web. And as a fan of rap, I often learn a ton about marketing from it. So I decided to interview Nah Right’s founder Eskay about his thoughts on marketing in the industry.

DZ: A lot of rap artists are getting involved in Twitter and doing very well with stuff like trending hashtags. Does social media actually
